Lindsey Vonn, a former champion skier, has returned to the slopes after a six-year break, achieving impressive results at the Alpine Ski Championships in Austria, finishing 4th and 6th. Her comeback is influenced by a new titanium knee replacement that has significantly reduced her pain and allowed her to rediscover her passion for skiing.
Vonn, who has won an astonishing 82 World Cup races, revealed that for years, she struggled with knee issues that made everyday skiing difficult. “I was in so much pain,” she explained, emphasizing how the partial knee replacement has transformed her life. “It took my pain away and let me get back to skiing, which I love.”
Beyond her return to skiing, Vonn is adjusting to other changes in her life. She is currently single after ending her relationship with her longtime boyfriend, Diego Osorio. Vonn humorously remarked that this year’s Valentine’s Day would be different for her but mentioned her two dogs would be her companions.
During her six-year hiatus from racing, Vonn focused on her foundation and took on various board positions. Despite her busy life, she acknowledges the challenges of her situation and the occasional loneliness she experiences. “It’s a tough road,” she admitted, but she feels fortunate to be doing what she loves.
Vonn took everyone by surprise by returning to competition just eight months after her surgery. Initially, she aimed to train for the 2026 Winter Olympics but found herself ready to race much sooner than expected. She feels confident but recognizes that there is still work ahead to fully prepare for the next big event.
Rejoining her ski team has been a highlight for her. Vonn expressed her joy in being back among her fellow athletes and coaches, describing it as a family atmosphere. “It’s awesome,” she said. “I missed being around that, and everyone welcomed me with open arms.”
Interestingly, Vonn also noted the amusing aspect of racing alongside much younger competitors, joking about how some of them were born after she made her Olympic debut. She hopes to share her experience and support her teammates as they compete.
As Vonn continues her impressive journey back to professional skiing, her spirit and determination remain strong, showcasing the resilience of an athlete who refuses to be defined by her challenges.
