Russian Strikes Target Ukraine, Raising Concerns for Winter
Kyiv, Ukraine – Recent Russian drone and missile strikes have caused damage and injuries in Kyiv and other parts of Ukraine. At least 20 people were wounded in Kyiv, and a child tragically died in a separate attack in the southeast. These attacks are raising concerns about Ukraine’s ability to withstand the upcoming winter months.
In Kyiv, a 17-story apartment building was struck, requiring rescue crews to evacuate residents. Several people were hospitalized due to the attack.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated the strikes targeted civilian and energy infrastructure. Prime Minister Yuliia Svyrydenko described the event as a major attack on Ukraine’s energy systems.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported power outages in the city, and DTEK, Ukraine’s main electricity provider, said repairs are underway at damaged power plants.
Russia has focused on Ukraine’s energy sector since its invasion in early 2022. Concerns are rising that Russia seeks to weaken Ukrainian resolve by disrupting the power grid before winter.
Ukraine’s air force reported that Russia used a large number of strike drones and missiles in the recent attacks. They claimed to have intercepted a significant portion of the incoming ordinance.
In the Zaporizhzhia region, a young boy was killed by drone and missile strikes. A hydroelectric plant in the area was temporarily shut down as a safety measure. The situation highlights the ongoing need to support Ukraine in defending its infrastructure and protecting its citizens, especially as winter approaches.
