A group with ties to Russia has claimed responsibility for a recent cyberattack that significantly disrupted France’s postal service, La Poste, just before Christmas, according to French prosecutors.
The hacking group, known as Noname057, has been under investigation. France’s intelligence agency, DGSI, has now taken over the inquiry into the cyberattack.
This group has been linked to other cyberattacks in Europe, including those targeting French government websites and events around a NATO meeting in the Netherlands. European police have previously targeted the group in a large operation.
The cyberattack, a distributed denial of service (DDoS), affected La Poste’s computer systems, making it difficult to track packages. Online payments at the company’s banking division were also affected. This attack is a serious blow to La Poste, a major employer that handles billions of packages each year.
French authorities suggest that Russia may be using such tactics to create discord in Western countries and weaken their resolve against Russian aggression.
