The Kennedy Center is dealing with some drama after its decision to honor President Trump by adding his name to the building. Jazz musician Chuck Redd canceled his Christmas Eve show because of the change.
Richard Grenell, who is in charge of the Kennedy Center, isn’t happy about Redd’s choice. He says it hurts the center financially and called it a “political stunt.” Grenell even mentioned seeking $1 million to cover the damages caused by Redd’s last-minute withdrawal.
Redd explained that he canceled because he saw the name change on the Kennedy Center’s website and building.
The Kennedy Center’s board voted to rename the institution the “Trump-Kennedy Center.”
This decision has faced criticism, with some, including members of the Kennedy family, arguing it disrespects President Kennedy’s legacy.
Since President Trump’s return to office, other artists have also canceled their Kennedy Center shows, including Lin-Manuel Miranda.
Roma Daravi, the Kennedy Center’s spokesperson, believes Redd is mixing politics with art. She says that artists should perform for everyone, no matter their political views, and that art should bring people together.
President Trump’s name was recently added to the Kennedy Center’s exterior, and the website now reflects the change, calling it “The Trump Kennedy Center.”
