Kendra Bates, a former dancer who once worked as an OnlyFans model, has traded the bright lights of Los Angeles for a simpler life among the Amish in Pennsylvania. The 33-year-old is participating in a new TLC show called “Suddenly Amish,” which follows people as they leave their modern lives to experience a traditional Amish community.
Bates, who says she has been reconnecting with her Christian faith, felt that life in Los Angeles had become too superficial and disconnected from her values. She saw the opportunity to live with the Amish as a way to get back to her roots.
The show features Bishop Vernon, who welcomes “English,” or non-Amish, people into their community. This is seen as something new for the Amish, who typically keep to themselves. Cameras are allowed to document this unique social experiment.
Bates explained that she felt called to this experience, seeing it as a chance to realign her life with her beliefs. She mentioned that her family has Mennonite roots, a group similar to the Amish but generally more open to modern ways.
The Amish way of life emphasizes humility and community, often avoiding photographs to discourage vanity. For Bates, this experience is a chance to learn from Amish women and embrace a more traditional lifestyle.
While Bates was ready to give up her phone and makeup, she was surprised by the focus on her appearance. In one episode, Bishop Vernon spoke to her about dressing modestly, a stark contrast to the fashion she was used to in California.
Bates, who was baptized in January 2025, is now committed to living a life that honors God. She has given away most of her revealing clothes and is focusing on her faith. She now believes that her past does not define her.
“Suddenly Amish” airs Tuesday nights on TLC.
