Jelly Roll, a popular country music artist, expressed heartfelt appreciation for military personnel and veterans at the Invictus Games. On February 16, he performed at the Closing Ceremony for the Invictus Games Vancouver Whistler 2025 in Vancouver, Canada. He was announced as a lead performer for the event, joining acts like Barenaked Ladies and The War and Treaty, the latter featuring Michael Trotter Jr., a U.S. veteran.
During his emotional performance, Jelly Roll, whose real name is Jason DeFord, spoke to the audience, saying, “I am honored to stand in front of some of the greatest and strongest people across the entire world tonight.” He then kicked off his set with his song “I Am Not Okay.”
With genuine enthusiasm, he thanked the Invictus Games for allowing him to share his music with those who have served. Jelly Roll remarked, “I want to be clear right now about what’s happening on this stage. I am an overweight man with a microphone. The real heroes are the athletes and families here tonight.” He encouraged the athletes to remember that any negative thoughts they might have are simply lies, emphasizing the importance of self-belief.
His powerful performance capped off the last day of the Invictus Games, which had begun on February 8 with an exciting Opening Ceremony. The games, founded by Prince Harry for injured veterans, have continued to showcase the power of sports as a healing tool.
Prince Harry, a former British Army captain, created the Invictus Games in 2014 in London, and this year’s event marked its seventh occurrence. He expressed hope that one day, the need for such games would no longer exist but acknowledged the continued necessity for them as long as there are veterans who require support.
The Invictus Games Vancouver Whistler welcomed over 500 athletes from 23 countries, marking the first time winter sports were included in this event. Prince Harry praised Canada as an ideal host, stating that everyone was thrilled to have the games back on Canadian soil. The next edition of the Invictus Games is set to take place in Birmingham, England, in 2027.
This year’s games not only highlighted the resilience of the athletes but also reinforced the importance of community and support for those who have served their countries.
