Kansas City Chiefs Eye Move to Kansas, Sparking Debate
TOPEKA, Kan. – Kansas lawmakers are considering a proposal that could bring the Kansas City Chiefs to the Sunflower State. The plan aims to create a new stadium, potentially replacing the aging Arrowhead Stadium and attracting year-round events.
The Legislative Coordinating Council, comprised of top state officials, is meeting to discuss the proposal. Chiefs owner Clark Hunt and other team representatives are expected to attend. If approved, the Chiefs could announce their departure from their current stadium at the Truman Sports Complex, which has been their home for 53 years, for a new stadium estimated to cost over $2 billion.
The Kansas proposal involves issuing STAR bonds to cover up to 70% of the project’s total cost. These bonds would be repaid using state sales and liquor tax revenues generated within a specific area surrounding the sports complex.
This method of funding was previously used to develop Kansas Speedway and the surrounding commercial area known as The Legends in Kansas City, Kansas. This area is the most likely location for a future Chiefs stadium.
Kansas officials are optimistic about the potential economic benefits. “The state of Kansas is in active discussions with the Kansas City Chiefs about the prospects of building a new stadium and other facilities in Kansas,” stated the Kansas Department of Commerce. “No final agreement has been reached, but this would be a massive economic win for Kansas and benefit Kansans for generations to come. We are aggressively pursuing this opportunity.”
The potential move has sparked debate in Missouri. Missouri lawmakers, including Governor Mike Kehoe, have been working on their own proposals to keep the Chiefs in the state. A special legislative session was held in June to authorize bonds covering up to 50% of the cost of new or renovated stadiums, along with tax credits and local government aid.
The Chiefs had initially planned an $800 million renovation of Arrowhead Stadium in collaboration with the Kansas City Royals. However, after voters rejected a local sales tax extension, both teams began exploring separate options. The Royals are also considering a move to Kansas.
Kansas City, Missouri, Mayor Quinton Lucas has been working to keep both teams in Missouri. He stated that negotiations with the Chiefs were ongoing.
Clark Hunt has expressed a preference for renovating Arrowhead Stadium, which holds a special place in the team’s history. However, a new stadium could offer new revenue streams and the ability to host events year-round, including concerts, college football bowl games, and potentially a Super Bowl.
