Israel Holds Firm: Key Terrorist Figure Remains in Custody Amid Prisoner Release
RAMALLAH, West Bank – While a temporary ceasefire deal between Israel and Hamas will see the release of some Palestinian prisoners in exchange for hostages, Israel has refused to release Marwan Barghouti, a convicted terrorist leader.
Barghouti is serving multiple life sentences for his role in attacks that killed five Israelis in 2004. Despite pressure from Hamas, Israel remains firm in its decision not to release him or other high-profile prisoners.
Some observers believe Barghouti is viewed as a potential leader among Palestinians. However, Israeli officials see him as a dangerous terrorist.
As part of the ceasefire, Hamas is expected to release around 20 Israeli hostages. In return, Israel will release approximately 250 Palestinian prisoners.
Many Israelis view the prisoners as terrorists, while some Palestinians consider them freedom fighters. Many of those being released were arrested during the Second Intifada in the 2000s, a period marked by violence and terror attacks against Israeli civilians.
Hamas has previously demanded Barghouti’s release in exchange for ending the fighting in Gaza. However, Israel has consistently refused.
Israel is wary of repeating past mistakes, such as the 2011 release of Yahya Sinwar, a senior Hamas leader who later played a key role in orchestrating attacks against Israel.
Barghouti, who has been described as a potential successor to Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, has strong ties to violence against Israel. In 2002, he expressed support for Palestinian resistance against Israel. He never recognized the authority of the court that convicted him.
Israel’s decision to keep Barghouti imprisoned reflects its commitment to national security and its refusal to reward terrorism.
