On the night of March 13, 2017, Danielle McLaughlin, a backpacker from County Donegal, Ireland, was enjoying the company of fellow travelers on a quiet beach in India. Dave Woodruff, who met her at the Green Park beach resort in Palolem, recalled their conversation, noting how engaging and friendly McLaughlin was. They chatted for hours about her life and family.
Tragically, the next morning brought shocking news. Danielle was found dead in a nearby field, her body showing signs of violence, including strangulation. Police reported that she was discovered lying in a pool of blood with injuries to her head and face.
Now, eight years after this horrific crime, justice has been delivered. On February 14, 2024, Vikat Bhagat, 31, was found guilty of both raping and murdering McLaughlin in the popular tourist area. Just a few days later, on February 17, he was sentenced to life in prison, along with an additional life term for rape and three years for destroying evidence, all to be served concurrently.
When McLaughlin was killed, she had only been in India for two weeks. An autopsy confirmed that her death was caused by damage to the brain and neck constriction.
Bhagat was arrested within hours of the discovery of McLaughlin’s body. His capture followed the release of surveillance footage showing McLaughlin walking with him the evening before she was killed. Although he confessed to the murder, he denied any sexual assault.
Woodruff remembered how a group of men had approached while he, McLaughlin, and his friends were talking on the beach. Those men were noted to pull McLaughlin’s attention, trying to dominate the moment. Notably, McLaughlin had mentioned meeting one of those men, who promised to help her find a place to stay, a man Woodruff believes was Bhagat.
Following the court’s decision, McLaughlin’s family expressed their relief after nearly eight years of fighting for justice. Her sister, Joleen McLaughlin Brannigan, shared their heartache, saying they can finally start to grieve the loss of Danielle, who lived her life fully during her 28 years.
