Manchester City Eyes Crystal Palace Defender Marc Guehi in Potential Transfer
Manchester City is reportedly interested in acquiring Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi for a sum of around £20 million. This possible transfer comes after a period where Guehi was also considered by Chelsea.
Guehi, a central defender, has become a prominent figure in the Premier League, known for his defensive skills and composure on the field. His potential move to Manchester City suggests that the club is aiming to strengthen its defensive lineup as they compete for titles in the upcoming season.
Interestingly, Chelsea had an opportunity to bring Guehi back to the club last year, but the then-manager, Enzo Maresca, decided against pursuing the transfer.
Maresca, who departed from his role as Chelsea manager earlier this year, reportedly had reservations about Guehi’s fit within the team’s tactical setup, particularly when playing with five defenders. Despite Chelsea’s need for a strong central defender, Maresca was not convinced that Guehi was the right player for the role at that time.
Chelsea has since looked at other options to bolster their defense, but Guehi remained a player of interest within the club. However, Manchester City’s current pursuit indicates that they are keen on securing his services, potentially leaving Chelsea to explore other alternatives.
Guehi’s journey in professional football began at Chelsea, where he joined as a young player at the age of seven. He spent 14 years developing through the club’s youth ranks, establishing himself as a highly regarded prospect.
He made his first-team debut for Chelsea in 2019 during an EFL Cup match, but he faced challenges in securing regular playing time due to strong competition from other established defenders. To gain more experience, Guehi went on an 18-month loan to Swansea City, where he excelled and became recognized as one of the top defenders in the Championship.
Upon his return to Chelsea, Guehi found himself behind several experienced defenders in the pecking order, including Thiago Silva, Antonio Rudiger, Andreas Christensen, and Kurt Zouma. Recognizing the need for consistent playing time to further his development, Guehi made the decision to seek opportunities elsewhere.
Crystal Palace signed Guehi, and he quickly became a key player for the team. His performances have attracted attention from top clubs, including Manchester City, who are now considering adding him to their squad.
The reported salary that Manchester City are willing to offer Guehi is substantial. This could have been a difficult figure for Chelsea to match, which may have influenced their decision not to pursue the transfer more aggressively.
