Google has recently announced that it will take a stronger stance against fake online reviews, following an investigation by British regulators. The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) stated that the tech giant has agreed to implement “rigorous steps” to identify and remove misleading reviews. This initiative aims to protect consumers and ensure they can trust what they read online.
Under this new commitment, Google will delete reviews from individuals who are found to repeatedly post fake or deceptive comments about businesses in the U.K. These users will also be prohibited from leaving new reviews, regardless of their location. Similarly, businesses that engage in fraudulent practices to boost their ratings will face penalties, including warnings on their Google profiles and restrictions on new reviews. If these businesses continue to partake in dishonest activities, all of their reviews from the previous six months could also be erased.
To empower consumers, Google is introducing a straightforward process for reporting suspicious reviews, particularly those involving compensation for positive feedback. CMA CEO Sarah Cardell remarked that these changes will enhance consumer confidence and promote fair competition among businesses.
Google emphasized its ongoing efforts to combat fraudulent content, highlighting that it already blocks millions of fake reviews each year, often before they go live. The company also collaborates with regulators globally, including the CMA, to maintain the integrity of online reviews.
This move follows an ongoing investigation into Amazon regarding fake reviews, initiated in 2021 as part of a broader examination of consumer protection within the rapidly expanding online shopping sector due to the pandemic.
Fake reviews have been a persistent issue on the internet, impacting both consumers and honest businesses. Various online platforms have joined forces to fight against this problem, while authorities in the United States have similarly intensified their efforts. For instance, the Federal Trade Commission has implemented regulations to ban the buying and selling of fake reviews, penalizing those who participate in this unethical practice. Typically, these fraudulent reviews are exchanged in private groups, where businesses offer incentives to customers for favorable feedback, tarnishing the online marketplace.
