Heavy Snowfall on Everest Strands Hikers, Rescue Efforts Underway

A sudden and severe blizzard in the Tibetan region of Mount Everest left hundreds of hikers stranded, triggering a large-scale rescue operation. The unseasonal storm, characterized by heavy snow and thunderstorms, struck during a time when many were celebrating China’s National Day holiday, catching trekkers off guard at high altitudes on the mountain’s eastern face.
According to reports from Chinese state media, rescue teams managed to reach and evacuate approximately 350 hikers who were trapped at various tourist campsites along the mountain slopes. These individuals were transported to the nearby township of Qudang, where they are receiving assistance.
Tragically, the harsh weather conditions led to fatalities in nearby regions. A 41-year-old hiker in the Qilian Mountains of Qinghai Province succumbed to the elements, suffering from hypothermia and altitude sickness. Additionally, a 46-year-old South Korean climber died after being caught in the snowstorm while descending from Mera Peak.
Videos circulating online, reportedly released by Tibetan media outlets, showed rescued hikers receiving warm soup, highlighting the immediate relief provided after their ordeal.
Authorities indicate that around 200 hikers remain on the mountain. They have established contact with rescue teams, aiding in the ongoing efforts to locate and assist them.
One hiker, recounting their experience to Jimu News, described the severity of the storm, stating that the snow was three feet deep and had collapsed their tents. The hiker’s group was situated at an elevation of over 16,000 feet on the eastern slope of the nearly 29,000-foot-tall mountain when the storm hit on Friday evening.
Rescue operations are continuing despite the challenging conditions. Authorities are utilizing drones to deliver essential supplies to those still stranded and coordinating efforts to reach them.
