LONDON — Elton John recently opened up about his experience attending the London premiere of “The Devil Wears Prada,” a new musical he composed. Despite his struggle with eyesight issues caused by an infection, he expressed his admiration for the production.
Elton John, now 77, revealed that this health challenge has made it difficult to attend many previews of the musical. Speaking to the audience at the gala event, he stated, “I haven’t been able to come to many of the previews because, as you know, I have lost my eyesight.” Nevertheless, he added, “It’s hard for me to see it, but I love to hear it and, boy, it sounded good tonight.”
Earlier this year, John shared on Instagram that he has only “limited vision in one eye” due to an infection and noted that the healing process is taking time.
“The Devil Wears Prada,” which is based on the popular 2006 movie, explores the life of a young journalist immersed in the competitive world of fashion. The show, performed at the Dominion Theatre, stars Vanessa Williams as the formidable editor Miranda Priestly, a character famously portrayed by Meryl Streep in the film.
The gala not only celebrated the musical but also served as a fundraiser for the Elton John AIDS Foundation. It attracted a host of celebrities and notable figures from the fashion industry, including designer Donatella Versace and Anna Wintour, the former Vogue editor who inspired the Priestly character. Wintour described the musical as “entertaining,” reflecting the general excitement surrounding the production.
