Maye highlighted Usha’s remarkable achievements and questioned why more attention hasn’t been given to her being the first Indian American and the first Hindu to serve in this role.
“Why is no one celebrating Usha Vance as the first Indian American and first Hindu Second Lady?” Maye Musk remarked on the platform X. She continued by noting, “Usha is even lovelier in person, smart and charming.”
Usha Vance has garnered significant support from many within the Republican Party, especially since her husband, JD Vance, was selected as Donald Trump’s running mate. During the inauguration ceremony, President Trump humorously mentioned that he had considered selecting Usha as his vice-presidential pick, stating, “The only one smarter [than him] is his wife. I would have chosen her, but somehow, the line of succession didn’t work that way.”
During the campaign season, Usha and JD faced hostility stemming from her Indian heritage. JD has openly defended his wife, emphasizing that he loves her for who she is, despite facing attacks from white supremacists. “Look, I love my wife so much. I love her because she’s who she is,” he expressed in an interview.

Usha and JD married in Kentucky in 2014 after graduating from Yale Law School and later moved to San Francisco. Long before JD became Vice President, Usha had already encountered discrimination due to her husband’s rise in politics. Notably, in 2022, JD criticized a local newspaper for publishing a politically charged cartoon that mocked him and Usha, accusing them of being racially insensitive.
JD’s campaign condemned the cartoon, calling on the newspaper to take responsibility for their actions. Although the newspaper supported JD’s Senate opponent, he triumphed in the general election, showcasing resilience in the face of adversity.
Usha’s background is rooted in her parents’ immigration to the United States from India in the 1970s. Growing up in a Hindu household in San Diego, she was instilled with the values of hard work and education. Her mother, a biologist and academic leader, along with her father, an engineer, emphasized perseverance as crucial to success. This foundation led Usha to excel academically, ultimately gaining acceptance to Yale University.
After her undergraduate studies, she was awarded the prestigious Gates Cambridge Scholarship, enabling her to pursue advanced studies at the University of Cambridge. Her journey continued to Yale Law School, where she met JD during a collaborative project. In his memoir, “Hillbilly Elegy,” JD wrote endearingly about Usha, calling her his “Yale spirit guide” and recognizing her impressive intellect.
