In India, a series of tragic events has unfolded as an elephant has killed at least 17 people in just a few days. Among the victims was a family of four.
Reports indicate that the elephant, believed to be a young male, has been responsible for around 12 separate attacks since the beginning of January. These incidents have occurred in the West Singhbhum district of Jharkhand, a state in eastern India.
One of the most recent deaths happened when a woman died in the hospital from injuries sustained in an attack. Other victims have been identified as Chipri Chimpi, Prakash Das, and a young boy. Sadly, in one attack, Das’s head was found separated from his body. Another devastating incident claimed the lives of a husband, wife, and their two children in their village.
Wildlife officials are working hard to find the elephant. Government and independent teams from across India have joined the search. The plan is to tranquilize and move the elephant once it’s found.
The forest department has been sharing safety tips with the public about what to do if they encounter an elephant. One official mentioned that the elephant seems to be moving randomly across a large area, making it difficult to track.
Authorities are also helping villagers move to safer locations while the search for the elephant continues. People living in the area have said that the elephant often attacks at night while they are sleeping. They have been using firecrackers and setting up patrols to try and keep the animal away from populated areas.
It’s believed that the male elephant may be in a state called “musth.” This is when male elephants experience a surge in testosterone, which can make them very aggressive.
Local people are asking for a long-term solution to prevent these dangerous encounters and for the families of the victims to receive compensation.
