Drake has taken legal steps against Universal Music Group (UMG) for the second consecutive day, this time filing a lawsuit in Texas over Kendrick Lamar’s diss track titled “Not Like Us.” This latest move follows Drake’s initial filing in New York, where he accused UMG of artificially boosting the song’s popularity on platforms like Spotify.
The situation has escalated the ongoing feud between these two prominent hip-hop artists, dragging the parent company of both their labels into the conflict. In his Texas filing, Drake claims that UMG engaged in illegal business practices to promote “Not Like Us,” including making improper payments to iHeartMedia in San Antonio. This legal action is seen as a step towards a more formal lawsuit, as Drake seeks to question representatives from both companies about the allegations.
Drake’s complaint highlights that the song and its accompanying visuals attack his reputation, leveling serious accusations against him, including claims of being a “predator” and a “certified pedophile.” The filing suggests that these statements are defamatory and sets the stage for potential legal action against UMG.
A spokesperson for UMG did not provide immediate comments regarding this latest lawsuit but previously stated that the company operates with high ethical standards. Attempts to reach iHeartMedia for a response have also gone unanswered.
Drake’s earlier petition in New York hinted at a possible lawsuit too, suggesting that UMG dismissed employees loyal to Drake to hide what he describes as unethical practices.
This back-and-forth legal drama marks a significant turning point in the rivalry between Drake, a five-time Grammy winner from Canada, and Lamar, a Pulitzer Prize winner who is expected to perform at the upcoming Super Bowl halftime show.
