New Orleans police are trying to figure out what happened after a man suspected of a deadly car theft was found shot in the head. This happened just 15 minutes after the crime.
Raymond Wells, who was 21 years old, was accused of killing 36-year-old Carl Morgan on September 30.
Police say Wells likely shot Morgan and stole his car around 5:15 p.m. Morgan was picking up his son from daycare on Canal Street.
Wells then drove off in Morgan’s car, leaving Morgan and his son in the parking lot. About 15 minutes later, the car stopped on Interstate 10 in Metairie, which is near New Orleans. Wells was found inside, not moving.
On October 1, Deputy Police Chief Nicholas Gernon said that Wells had been shot in the head and was in very bad condition at a hospital.
Gernon said that if Wells got better, he would be charged with murder.
However, on October 5, police said that Wells had died that morning.
Deputy Chief Gernon said that Wells may have been breaking into cars near Bienville Street before the car theft. Some people saw him and he shot at them and some cars.
Gernon said that these people are helping the police. The police are trying to find out if anyone shot back at Wells.
After the car theft, police were able to find Morgan’s car using special license plate readers. They were told that the car had stopped around 6:30 p.m. Officers found Wells inside with a gunshot wound and took him to a hospital.
The coroner will perform an autopsy on Wells.
Morgan was a chef at Brennan’s restaurant and had a son.
The restaurant said that Morgan’s death was very sad.
They said that Morgan was a good father, partner, son, and friend. They will miss his talent and energy.
The restaurant asked people to be kind and live life to the fullest like Carl did.
A fundraising page has been set up to help Morgan’s partner, Lisa, and son, Silas. It has raised over $45,000.
The page says that Morgan was a great person who will be missed. He was a chef who inspired others and made the kitchen a fun place.
Most importantly, Morgan loved his family. His son, Silas, was his everything, and Lisa was his partner and best friend.
Shawn Anglim, a pastor at a nearby church, said that teachers at the daycare heard the shooting and quickly brought the children inside.
The daycare has now added extra security during drop-off and pick-up times. The church is also thinking about adding more safety measures.
The pastor said that everyone is making decisions together during this difficult time. He said that a man lost his life, a child lost his father, a partner lost her love, and the city lost a bright light.
