Two National Guard Members Shot in Washington D.C.
Washington D.C. – In a shocking incident Wednesday afternoon, two West Virginia National Guard members were shot just blocks from the White House. The suspect is reportedly an Afghan national who entered the U.S. through the Biden administration’s “Operation Allies Welcome” program, sparking renewed concerns about the vetting process for refugees.
The National Guard members were immediately hospitalized. The shooter was also shot and taken into custody.
The incident is occurring during a time of heightened debate regarding the use of National Guard troops in the nation’s capital.
Law enforcement officials have identified the suspect as Rahmanullah Lakanwal, who arrived in the U.S. in 2021.
President Trump addressed the nation in a video statement, calling for the reinvestigation of all Afghan refugees brought into the country under the Biden administration. “If they can’t love our country, we don’t want them,” he stated, condemning the shooting as “a crime against our entire nation.”
D.C. police stated there is no known motive. According to investigators, the assailant ambushed the troops, opening fire immediately. Mayor Bowser called it a targeted shooting.
The shooting took place near a metro station. Other National Guard members apprehended the suspect after he was shot.
Vice President JD Vance, speaking from Fort Campbell, Kentucky, reminded Americans that soldiers, including National Guard members, are essential to the nation’s defense.
This incident raises serious questions about the security risks associated with rapidly resettling large numbers of individuals without proper vetting. Critics argue that prioritizing speed over thoroughness can have dangerous consequences. The safety and security of American citizens and those who defend our nation must be the top priority.
