Ames, Iowa – A scary scene unfolded during Saturday’s college football game between Iowa State and Arizona State when Iowa State tight end Benjamin Brahmer was injured.
The incident occurred in the fourth quarter with Iowa State trailing 24-19. Brahmer caught a pass and was tackled by Arizona State’s Keith Abney II. After the hit, Brahmer struggled to get to his feet.
While trainers came to assist him, Brahmer tried to walk off the field, but lost his balance and fell to the ground. Medical personnel quickly attended to him, and he was taken off the field on a cart.
Iowa State Head Coach Matt Campbell said after the game that Brahmer was taken to a local hospital as a precaution. Campbell shared that the early reports on Brahmer’s condition were encouraging.
“So far the feedback we’ve gotten has been positive…it was tough to watch and Ben is as tough as they come,” Campbell said.
Iowa State quarterback Rocco Becht also commented on the situation, saying, “We’re just happy that guy is all right. He’s conscious and we’ll miss that guy. He’ll be back better than ever.”
Brahmer had a touchdown earlier in the game before the injury. Reports indicated that he was alert as he was being taken off the field.
Arizona State ultimately won the game 24-19. Quarterback Jeff Sims led the Sun Devils with an impressive performance, setting a new school record for rushing yards by a quarterback with 228. Sims accounted for 405 total yards and was involved in three touchdowns. His most significant play was an 88-yard touchdown run in the third quarter.
The Cyclones suffered their fourth consecutive loss with this defeat. Their final chance to score was cut short when they were stopped just a yard shy of a first down on fourth-and-6 in the last moments of the game.
The team and fans are hoping for a quick and full recovery for Brahmer.
