Tim Curry Speaks Out on Tom Cruise, Hollywood’s Image Obsession
Tim Curry, best known for his role in “The Rocky Horror Picture Show,” has released a memoir called “Vagabond,” and he’s not holding back on his views of Hollywood and its stars. In the book, Curry reflects on his experiences filming the 1985 movie “Legend” with Tom Cruise.
Curry admits he wasn’t particularly impressed with Cruise, even though Cruise was already a rising star at the time. He found Cruise to be very dedicated to his role, perhaps even too much, recalling how Cruise wanted to sleep on the snow set to better embody his character.
Curry acknowledges Cruise’s professionalism but questions the intense focus on image and fame in Hollywood. He noted that while Cruise certainly has the looks and money that Hollywood values, he was “never blown away by his talent.” Curry, on the other hand, spent six hours each day getting into his demonic villain makeup.
He also shares that he and Cruise didn’t spend much time together off-screen. Curry appreciated Cruise’s thoughtfulness as a colleague.
“Legend” didn’t do well when it first came out, but it has since gained a cult following. Curry’s performance was widely praised.
In his memoir, Curry also reflects on his early days in Hollywood, where he observed the drug-fueled party scene of the 1970s and 80s. He remembers a time when Hollywood was a bit “tacky around the edges,” but also a place where he felt free to reinvent himself. Despite the excesses, he found a sense of belonging in Los Angeles, especially after his sister’s death and during his recovery from a stroke in 2012. He says LA became a true home for him.
