This initiative comes in response to China’s recent actions to restrict access to these crucial resources amidst ongoing trade tensions with the United States.
During a recent earnings call, CEO Lourenco Goncalves emphasized the vital role rare earths play beyond steel production, stating, “It is our duty as a company to explore opportunities at our mining sites.” He pointed out that they have identified two promising locations in Michigan and Minnesota, where geological assessments indicate the presence of rare earth minerals.
Goncalves noted that this effort aligns closely with the previous Trump administration’s push to bolster domestic production of critical materials and reduce reliance on foreign suppliers. “The goal is to achieve independence in essential materials, much like what we’ve accomplished in the steel industry,” he stated.
The CEO also highlighted the importance of self-reliance in critical mineral sourcing, saying that American manufacturing should not depend on foreign nations, especially China, for essential minerals. Cleveland-Cliffs is positioning itself to be a key player in this vital initiative.
In light of these developments, President Trump has made clear his intention to address trade matters with China, including the critical issue of rare earth minerals. Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent expressed a desire to avoid escalating trade conflicts but acknowledged the uneven nature of current trade between the U.S. and China. U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer underscored that while there are opportunities for trade, the existing imbalances require attention.
Recently, Trump threatened to impose significant tariffs in response to China’s plans to enforce export controls on rare earth minerals, labeling these actions as strategic and detrimental to global trade.
