The U.S. Government is Moving Away From Paper Checks
Washington D.C. – The federal government is beginning to phase out paper checks for most government programs.
This shift, started under President Donald Trump, aims to save taxpayer money, prevent fraud, and speed up payments by using electronic methods. Programs like Social Security, Supplemental Security Income, and tax refunds will be affected.
The move is expected to save money and reduce the risk of lost or stolen checks. The Trump administration argued that using electronic payments is a more secure and efficient way to manage taxpayer dollars.
While most people will receive their payments through direct deposit or a Direct Express card (for those without bank accounts), the Social Security Administration has stated that paper checks will still be available for those who have no other way to receive their money.
