The Arizona Cardinals have decided to part ways with Head Coach Jonathan Gannon, the team announced recently. The decision came shortly after the Cardinals concluded their season with a loss to the Los Angeles Rams.
Cardinals owner Michael Bidwill addressed the decision during a press conference, acknowledging Gannon’s strengths but emphasizing the importance of wins and losses in the NFL. “Jonathan is a very smart, motivated, enthusiastic, intelligent, awesome coach,” Bidwill said. “He made us better, but I think, as you all know, this is a league about wins and losses… We just felt like we were going in the wrong direction, and we needed to change course.”
Gannon’s tenure with the Cardinals lasted three seasons, with the 2025 season proving to be the most challenging. The team struggled to maintain momentum after an initial pair of victories, with injuries to key players and critical mistakes on the field contributing to their difficulties.
When asked to summarize the season, Gannon responded, “Not a great one. A lot of adversity, but growth will happen.” He added, “My best memory? My best memory has not happened. It will be the growth that comes from this year.”
The Cardinals faced numerous obstacles throughout the season, including injuries to key players such as Kyler Murray and James Conner. In addition, unforced errors, such as a costly fumble near the goal line, further hindered the team’s progress.
Gannon also faced a personal setback when he was fined by the NFL for an incident on the sidelines.
Gannon leaves the Cardinals with an overall record of 15-36. The team will now begin the search for a new head coach to lead them in the upcoming season. The organization will likely seek a candidate who can bring stability, leadership, and a winning strategy to the team. The next head coach will be tasked with developing young talent, improving team performance, and ultimately guiding the Cardinals to success on the field.
