According to the findings from NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, the ground on the peninsula has been shifting alarmingly at a rate of about four inches per week, particularly following intense rainfall events that marked the early months of 2024. Such significant movement of the terrain is not new for this region, known for its history of landslides, but the recent weather patterns, particularly following the remnants of Hurricane Hilary in the summer of 2023, have exacerbated the situation.
In light of these developments, California officials have declared a state of emergency for the peninsula. Record-breaking rains have caused substantial ground instability, resulting in substantial damage to properties. Some homes have already been divided as the earth underneath gave way, prompting residents to leave the area in search of safer living conditions.
The advanced technology used by NASA, particularly the Uninhabited Aerial Vehicle Synthetic Aperture Radar mounted on a Gulfstream III jet, has enabled scientists to create detailed visualizations of the affected region. This radar allows for precise mapping of the soil’s movement beneath the Palos Verdes Peninsula, illustrating not only the scale of the shifts but also the speed and direction of this unsettling geological activity.
As Alexander Handwerger, a landslide expert from JPL, points out, the area impacted by these landslides has expanded significantly, with a speed that endangers both human life and local infrastructure. The City of Rancho Palos Verdes has also communicated that, while the radar imagery from JPL demonstrates the alarming acceleration of landslide activity earlier in the fall, there have been signs of a slow down due to the drier weather and the installation of effective deep dewatering wells. Officials remain hopeful that these measures, along with continued state and federal support, will help stabilize the region and mitigate further risks.
