Tragic Murder of CEO Brian Thompson Shakes the Business World
Friends and family remember Brian Thompson as a bright star destined for success. At the time of his untimely death, he served as the CEO of UnitedHealthcare, the largest health insurer in the United States.
A family friend, Kelly Wirtz, shared a poignant memory about Thompson, recalling a classmate who described him as the smartest person he had ever known. “Growing up in a small town, I always knew he was meant for great things,” Wirtz stated in a new documentary that explores Thompson’s life.
The documentary titled Who Is Luigi Mangione? airs on ID and is available for streaming on Max. It not only focuses on Thompson’s achievements but also covers the man accused of his murder, Luigi Mangione, who is facing serious charges including murder and terrorism.
Thompson was shot and killed in a shocking incident outside the Hilton Midtown in Manhattan on December 4, 2024. Footage from the scene showed a masked gunman approaching him from behind as he walked toward a hotel event for investors.
Wirtz expressed her sadness over Thompson’s death, saying, “He was a young man who worked hard to succeed and had so much potential. It’s a tragedy that he was taken from us too soon.”
Law enforcement launched a manhunt that led to Mangione’s arrest. Officials believe he targeted Thompson due to his negative feelings towards the health insurance sector.
Thompson’s journey was impressive. He hailed from Iowa and graduated at the top of his class as valedictorian from South Hampton High School in 1993. He then went on to the University of Iowa, where he also excelled academically.
Starting his career at PricewaterhouseCoopers, Thompson joined UnitedHealthcare in 2004. His rise within the company was swift, and he became CEO in 2021. Colleagues described him as sharp and approachable.
“He climbed the corporate ladder quickly and made a significant impact on the company’s success,” noted Wendell Potter, a former health insurance executive.
Outside of his demanding job, Thompson was a devoted family man. He had two sons with his wife, Paulette, whom he met during their time at the University of Iowa. Wirtz fondly recalled their family, saying, “They looked like the perfect family, always well-dressed and happy.”
At the time of his death, Thompson and Paulette were separated but maintained a friendly relationship, living close to each other in Maple Grove, Minnesota. Paulette shared her heartbreak in the documentary, stating, “Brian was a kind person with a huge heart. He brought joy to many lives.”
Meanwhile, Mangione has been charged with multiple counts including murder and terrorism in New York, along with additional federal charges that could lead to the death penalty if he is found guilty. He has pleaded not guilty.
