A harsh wave of Arctic air is set to invade the U.S., marking what many are calling the coldest snap of this winter. The frigid conditions are expected to linger throughout the week, sending temperatures plummeting across much of the country.
Meteorologists are noting that various Arctic weather patterns are converging, pushing air typically confined near the North Pole into both the U.S. and parts of Europe. This extreme weather has already occurred multiple times this winter, making it the tenth occurrence linked to the polar vortex phenomenon—an atmospheric twist that allows some of the coldest air to escape southward. Experts indicate that such an event typically occurs only two to three times in a normal winter.
As we enter the next week, the cold will make its way primarily east of the Rocky Mountains, with most areas expect to feel the chill except for central and southern Florida and parts of the far west. Forecasts suggest an average low temperature of 16.6 degrees Fahrenheit across the contiguous United States. Following that, conditions may dip further to around 14 degrees.
Astoundingly, 89% of the contiguous U.S. could experience temperatures below freezing sometime next week, with nearly a third expected to drop below zero. Wind chill factors will exacerbate the cold, with most states, barring the warmer ones like California and Hawaii, prone to feels-like temperatures of 20 degrees Fahrenheit or lower.
Certain Midwest states, including Kansas and Nebraska, are predicted to feel the brunt of these icy conditions, with temperatures possibly dropping 35 degrees below the normal range for this time of year. Meanwhile, some spots across the northern Plains and Rockies could see lows below zero.
While there are possibilities of accompanying storms bringing heavy snowfall or flooding, detailed predictions remain uncertain. The current cold snap is attributed to a combination of atmospheric conditions drawing Arctic air down from Canada.
Interestingly, this year’s unusual weather patterns could be linked to various factors, including natural randomness and possibly shifts in the jet stream due to atmospheric pressures, particularly over Greenland. Experts are keen to discover the reasoning behind this frequent polar vortex stretching this winter.
Despite the present conditions, it’s essential to remember that the world is still warming overall, and January recently set a record for global temperatures above pre-industrial levels. This dichotomy in weather serves to remind us that while we face challenging winters, other long-term trends, particularly those impacting our climate, continue onward.
