A woman in Chicago was hurt after being shot by U.S. Border Patrol agents. This happened after a series of similar events since the start of a new immigration operation.
According to Tricia McLaughlin from the Department of Homeland Security, the shooting happened in Brighton Park after agents were surrounded by about 10 cars. She said that the agents fired back because a woman in one of the cars had a semi-automatic weapon.
The Chicago Police Department said they came to the scene after getting a call about the shooting. They were there to keep the area safe.
Reports say the woman, who is a U.S. citizen, went to the hospital herself. However, other sources say she was found nearby and taken to the hospital by the Chicago Fire Department.
McLaughlin also mentioned that the woman was known to the agents for sharing information about them online. She added that no officers were hurt during the incident.
A local community group said that the federal agents may have caused a car crash near the shooting.
Police said they were there to help keep everyone safe. They also said that the federal agency is looking into what happened.
After the shooting, people gathered at the scene to protest. Agents responded by using pepper balls and tear gas.
A local resident said he heard several shots fired near his home and that it was a scary situation.
This shooting is one of several recent incidents involving Border Patrol officers in different states.
In another event last month, a man was killed in a Chicago suburb after hitting an ICE official with his car while trying to get away from a traffic stop.
Last week, someone shot at an ICE office in Dallas, killing one person and injuring two others. The shooter, who later died, had ammunition with the words “ANTI ICE” written on it.
