Battalion Chief Bob Atlas emphasized the concern over smoke toxicity, stating, “Any smoke that burns any combustible element is going to be toxic at some point. We are trying to ascertain what exactly is in the stream of smoke.” This issue highlighted the importance of safety measures in industrial settings.
Traffic disruptions were reported around the area, and the refinery was evacuated. Investigators have not yet determined the cause of the fire.
The Martinez Refining Company later announced that the fire was under control and that they were working alongside mutual aid firefighters at the scene. Their primary focus remained the safety of their responders and the public.
According to the company’s statement, while some smoke and flaring may continue, these are part of the refinery’s safety procedures to manage excess gases. They confirmed that all injured individuals had been treated, with some being taken to a hospital while others received care at the facility itself.
As the situation unfolded, local health departments warned that the smoke could affect individuals with respiratory issues and sent a HazMat team to evaluate the health impacts.
Following the emergency, the shelter-in-place order was lifted as air quality improved, although a public health advisory remained in effect for Martinez and surrounding areas.
