Blackhawks Name Jeff Blashill as New Head Coach
CHICAGO — The Chicago Blackhawks made a significant move on Thursday by hiring Jeff Blashill as their new head coach. This decision comes as Blashill, who is 51 years old and hails from Michigan, gets another opportunity to lead an NHL team.
Blashill previously coached the Detroit Red Wings for seven seasons, ending his tenure with a record of 204 wins, 261 losses, and 72 overtime losses. His last season with Detroit saw the team struggling, finishing with a 32-40-10 record in the 2021-2022 season. Despite these challenges, the Blackhawks are optimistic about his ability to develop young talent, having previously worked in various leagues including the AHL and USHL, as well as in college hockey.
“Blashill has demonstrated a talent for developing young players and integrating that development into team success. This aligns with our vision for the future,” said Kyle Davidson, the general manager of the Blackhawks. “We are excited for the direction he will take us.”
Blashill takes over a team that has faced significant struggles recently. The Blackhawks ended the last season with a record of 25 wins, 46 losses, and 11 overtime losses, finishing last in the Central Division for the second consecutive year. Prior to Blashill’s hiring, the team cycled through four coaches who had little to no prior head coaching experience in the NHL.
Following the dismissal of Luke Richardson in December, Anders Sorensen stepped in as the interim coach. Sorensen was considered for the permanent position but is expected to stay with the organization.
Davidson expressed support for Sorensen, noting, “We appreciate his contributions to the team. He’s a knowledgeable hockey mind and a great person.”
Looking ahead, Blashill has the opportunity to shape a roster that features promising young players like Connor Bedard. The team also holds two first-round draft picks in the upcoming drafts, giving them flexibility in making free-agent acquisitions.
Despite showing potential, the Blackhawks averaged just 2.73 goals per game last season while allowing 3.56, ranking near the bottom of the league in both categories. The team has only made one postseason appearance since 2017, which occurred under an altered playoff format due to COVID-19.
As Blashill steps into his new role, he will do so with an eye toward the franchise’s centennial season in 2025-26, hoping to turn things around and restore the Blackhawks to their former glory.
