The Phoenix Mercury are reportedly close to finalizing a significant trade with the Connecticut Sun to acquire star player Alyssa Thomas. According to sources, along with Thomas, the Sun will send Ty Harris to Phoenix. In return, Connecticut will receive Natasha Cloud, Rebecca Allen, and the No. 12 pick in the upcoming draft.
Alyssa Thomas has been a key player for the Connecticut Sun, helping to lead the team to the WNBA Finals in both 2019 and 2022. Earlier this month, she was designated as the franchise player, which limited her ability to sign with other teams to a trade. The official details of this sign-and-trade deal won’t be confirmed until February 1.
Additionally, there are reports that Thomas’ fiancée, DeWanna Bonner, who is currently a free agent, may also join the Mercury. Thomas, now 32, recently contributed to the U.S. team’s victory, earning an Olympic gold medal. Last season, she averaged impressive stats, including 10.6 points and 8.4 rebounds per game, and holds the record for the most triple-doubles in WNBA history.
Thomas has openly expressed concerns about the lack of facilities and support for the Sun compared to other franchises. In contrast, Phoenix has made strides this year by opening a new practice facility.
