According to recent data from the World Health Organization, about 99% of humanity encounters air quality that fails to meet established safety standards. This pollution is not just an inconvenience; it’s a critical issue, tragically leading to the premature deaths of approximately 7 million people each year.
Major cities, particularly in Asia, bear the brunt of this crisis. Populous areas like New Delhi, Dhaka, and Jakarta are known for their persistently poor air quality, making clean breathing feel like a distant dream for many residents. Experts emphasize that pollution isn’t exclusive to smog-laden skies; air can be harmful even when it appears clear.
Understanding the sources of air pollution is essential for finding solutions. Many harmful pollutants stem from the burning of fossil fuels for energy, gasoline for transportation, and even agricultural practices. The most lethal particles, known as PM 2.5, are tiny enough to penetrate the lungs deeply, primarily generated through fuel combustion. In contrast, larger particles like PM 10 are often related to dust from roads and fields.
Moreover, gases such as nitrogen and sulfur dioxide, which arise from the same combustion processes, pose additional risks to human health.
