Atlanta Airport Attack Averted Thanks to Alert Family
Atlanta, Georgia – A potential tragedy was averted at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport on Monday after police apprehended a man suspected of planning an attack. Billy Joe Cagle, 49, was arrested after his family alerted authorities to a social media livestream where he allegedly threatened to “shoot up” the airport.
According to Police Chief Darin Schierbaum, Cagle’s family contacted the Cartersville Police Department, expressing concern over his statements and the fact that he possessed an assault rifle. Cagle, described as a convicted felon, was found at the airport with a Chevrolet pickup truck parked outside the terminal doors.
Upon searching the vehicle, police discovered an AR-15 rifle and 27 rounds of ammunition. Authorities acted swiftly after Cagle entered the airport, approaching the TSA security checkpoint. He was taken into custody without incident.
“We’re here today briefing you on a success and not a tragedy because a family saw something and said something,” the chief said.
Cagle faces multiple charges, including making terroristic threats, criminal attempt to commit aggravated assault, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, and possession of a firearm by a felon.
Mayor Andre Dickens expressed gratitude that a tragedy was averted, highlighting the importance of vigilance and cooperation between families and law enforcement.
Authorities are investigating how Cagle, as a convicted felon, was able to obtain the firearm.
