A California police officer tragically lost her life this week while trying to help victims of a multi-vehicle accident on Interstate 8 in San Diego.
Officer Lauren Craven, just 25 and a resident of La Mesa, was struck and killed by a vehicle on Monday night shortly after she marked her birthday earlier in the month on October 7. This incident marked the first line-of-duty death for the La Mesa Police Department since her joining the force in February of the previous year.
Late Monday, after returning from the San Diego Central Jail, Officer Craven encountered a serious rollover accident while patrolling northeast of San Diego, near La Mesa. She quickly radioed in the crash and, without waiting for a response, exited her patrol car to assist those involved.
Sadly, while attending to the victims, she was struck by an oncoming vehicle. The driver of the overturned car she was helping, 19-year-old De’Veonte Morris, also lost his life in the accident. The initial crash involved five vehicles and triggered a chain reaction, resulting in several injuries, with at least one victim requiring hospitalization.
“This is a heartbreaking situation for everyone involved,” said La Mesa Police Chief Ray Sweeney during a press conference. “I offer my deepest condolences to the La Mesa Police Department, our law enforcement colleagues, and the family and friends of those who tragically lost their lives in this incident.”
The La Mesa Police Department honored Officer Craven, stating that her final actions showcased her unwavering dedication to serving and protecting others, a testament to her daily life. She was remembered for her bravery, compassion, and strong spirit, qualities that inspired her colleagues and empowered her community.
Several law enforcement agencies across California, including the California Highway Patrol, extended their sympathies, highlighting the value and courage displayed by Officer Craven in her service.
From a young age, Craven expressed her passion for helping others. Her father, David Craven, shared with a local news outlet that his daughter was inspired to pursue a career in law enforcement after experiencing a traumatic event during her college years, where a compassionate detective provided her with much-needed support.
In a heartfelt tribute, Officer Craven’s father recounted her words, “I want to dedicate my life to being that good police officer for anyone who needs me.”
On Thursday, first responders and community members gathered throughout San Diego County to honor her memory. A solemn procession began at the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office and ended at El Camino Memorial Park in Sorrento Valley, where she was laid to rest. Various law enforcement agencies and community members lined the route to pay their respects as patrols, motorcycles, and emergency vehicles escorted her in tribute.
