Devastating Flood Hits Summer Camp in Texas

As of Friday, at least 23 girls from Camp Mystic, an all-girls summer camp located along the Guadalupe River, have not been accounted for, while the death toll has tragically risen to 24.

Initial warnings had indicated 3 to 6 inches of rain, but the area received nearly a foot. The river’s rapid rise submerged flood gauges within just 45 minutes, creating a chaotic scene.
As rescue efforts continue, stories from the survivors are emerging. Thirteen-year-old Elinor Lester shared her experience of being evacuated by helicopter after navigating through chest-high waters. “The camp was completely destroyed,” she said, reflecting the fear and uncertainty as cabins were swept away and children scrambled for safety.
Parents and families have gathered at a reunification center, anxiously waiting to hear from authorities. Many expressed relief when finding their children safe, though a deep sorrow hangs over those with missing loved ones. “My kids are safe, but knowing others are still missing is just eating me alive,” one mother tearfully stated.
Ingram Elementary School is being used as a central point for families to reunite with their children. Young campers, some still wearing their camp T-shirts, were seen comforting one another as they awaited news.
