Tragic Incident in Idaho: Firefighters Shot Responding to Wildfire
Authorities have confirmed the identity of a suspect involved in a tragic shooting that resulted in the deaths of two firefighters and injured a third during a response to a wildfire in Idaho on June 29. The suspect has been identified as 20-year-old Wess Roley.
Law enforcement found Roley deceased near the scene on Canfield Mountain, where officials allege he intentionally set the fire to ambush the first responders. The firefighters were met with gunfire around 2 p.m. that day, prompting a swift response from tactical teams and helicopters, while nearby residents were instructed to stay indoors.
Roley’s grandfather mentioned that he had aspirations of becoming a firefighter and had previously worked in the tree service industry, stating, “He actually really respected law enforcement. He loved firefighters.” This tragedy left many puzzled, with family members suggesting that perhaps Roley faced some rejection that led to this act.
Currently, authorities believe Roley acted alone, but they have not publicly disclosed a motive for the violence. Investigators used cell phone data to locate his body near the scene later in the afternoon. It remains unclear if his death resulted from suicide or a confrontation with law enforcement.
The names of the fallen firefighters have not yet been released, but the third firefighter is reported to be in stable condition after receiving treatment at a local hospital. Kootenai County Sheriff Bob Norris described the attack as a total ambush, stating, “These firefighters did not have a chance.” The investigation continues as the community grapples with this heartbreaking event.
