Report: Nearly 24% of U.S. Households Live Paycheck to Paycheck
A recent report indicates that about 24% of households in the United States are living paycheck to paycheck as of 2025. While this figure has grown slightly from last year, the rate of increase is much slower than before.
According to the Bank of America Institute, living paycheck to paycheck refers to families spending over 95% of their income on essential expenses, such as housing, food, transportation, utilities, and child care. This leaves little or no room for savings or additional purchases.
Joe Wadford, an economist at the Bank of America Institute, shared insights on the challenges facing lower-income households. He noted that the financial struggles appear more concentrated among these families, who are grappling with rising costs. The situation is particularly difficult as they try to keep pace with inflation.
Since January 2025, inflation has outpaced after-tax wage growth for many middle- and lower-income families. The proportion of lower-income households living paycheck to paycheck has now reached 29%, a rise from 28.6% last year. Meanwhile, higher-income households have seen little change in this regard.
Wadford emphasized that inflation is a major factor for these families. For instance, while wages increased by just 1% in October, living costs surged by 3%. This disparity makes it increasingly difficult for families to manage their finances, leaving many feeling overwhelmed.
In contrast, around 19% of higher-income families are also living paycheck to paycheck, attributed largely to lifestyle choices that lead to increased expenses. This phenomenon, known as “lifestyle creep,” can affect even those with higher earnings, as they may find their finances strained by indulgent spending and rising bills.
The report also highlights a growing divide in wage growth, with lower-income earners seeing less significant increases compared to their higher-income counterparts since early 2025. This economic trend emphasizes the importance of addressing the needs of those who are struggling, particularly as the gap between different income groups widens.
In conclusion, the economic landscape poses considerable challenges for many families across the nation. With rising costs and stagnant wage growth, it remains crucial to find solutions that support financial stability for all households.
