Cleveland Meteorologist Mark Johnson Departed After Over 30 Years
Cleveland’s News 5 has announced the unexpected departure of Mark Johnson, a well-known meteorologist, who served the station for more than 30 years.
On Friday, May 9, the station confirmed on its website that Johnson "is no longer employed at WEWS," but did not provide any reason for this sudden change.
In a statement, Steve Weinstein, WEWS’ Vice President and General Manager, emphasized the importance of maintaining the audience’s trust and mentioned that the company holds its employees to the highest ethical standards. He noted that further details cannot be shared due to personnel privacy.
The station assured viewers that "safety and accuracy" remain priorities and stated that it will begin the search for Johnson’s replacement immediately.
Attempts to reach Johnson or gather more information from the station were not successful, as News Director Jodie Heisner stated they could not comment beyond the posted statement on their website.
It appears Johnson’s profile has already been removed from the station’s webpage. While he has not publicly addressed his exit, he changed his Facebook cover photo to a serene image of thunderous skies, signaling a new chapter.
In November 2023, Johnson reflected on his long tenure with WEWS, expressing gratitude to the audience for welcoming him into their homes for three decades.
A graduate of Kent State University, Johnson began his career at WEWS in November 1993. Throughout his time there, he received recognition from both the National Weather Association and the American Meteorological Society.
The community is left wondering about the circumstances of his departure and who will step into his influential role in local broadcasting.
