TOKYO — The world has a new record holder: the oldest female barber, Shitsui Hakoishi, has reached the remarkable age of 108, and she shows no signs of slowing down. This slender, white-haired woman recently celebrated the formal recognition of her status by Guinness World Records, an honor that has brought her immense joy.
During a news conference in her hometown of Nakagawa, located in Tochigi Prefecture northeast of Tokyo, Hakoishi expressed her gratitude, saying, “I could come this far only because of my customers. I’m overwhelmed and filled with joy.” Along with her delight in being recognized, she values the satisfaction of the many clients she has served over the decades.
Hakoishi’s inspiring journey began at the young age of 14 when she decided to become a barber. After moving to Tokyo to apprentice, she obtained her barber’s license at 20 and opened a salon with her husband. Tragically, she lost him during the Japan-China war in 1937. The struggles didn’t end there; her first salon was destroyed during the devastating U.S. firebombing of Tokyo in March 1945. After a long eight-year period, she opened a new salon, named Rihatsu Hakoishi, back in her hometown.
Now, as she approaches her 109th birthday, Hakoishi remains passionate about her craft and says she will continue working until she reaches 110, proudly stating her intent with a smile. Her story is a remarkable testament to resilience and dedication, making her a cherished figure in her community and beyond.
