Will Smith is not holding back in his new album, Based on a True Story, as he openly addresses the controversy surrounding his infamous slap of comedian Chris Rock at the 2022 Oscars. The actor, now 56, uses his music to reflect on the fallout from that incident, which has been a significant part of his public life in recent years.
The album, his first in two decades, features lyrics that touch on the media storm following the slap. For example, the opening track, “Int. Barbershop — Day,” includes a voice mentioning, “Will Smith is canceled,” hinting at the backlash he faced after the Oscars incident. Another voice in the same track expresses strong feelings about his actions, saying, “I ain’t never going to forgive him for that s— he did.”
The slap occurred when Rock made a joke about Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, while presenting at the Oscars. Smith reacted by striking Rock on stage and then returning to his seat to shout, "Keep my wife’s name out of your f—— mouth!"
In another song from the album, “You Lookin’ for Me?,” Smith reflects further, rapping, “Took a lot, I’m back on top.” This shows his determination to rise above the challenges he has faced, despite the controversy.
While Smith was awarded the Oscar for Best Actor for his role in King Richard, he was banned from attending any Academy events for ten years due to the slap. He also resigned from the Academy, accepting the consequences of his actions.
The album consists of collaborations with artists like B. Simone and DJ Jazzy Jeff, whom Smith had worked with in the past. It includes references to his family dynamics, with lines discussing his relationship with Jada and others gossiping about his life.
In a teaser for the album, Smith shared glimpses from his personal life and spoke about his journey of self-discovery over the years. He emphasized that the making of this album allowed him to be more honest about himself than ever before, hinting at a new chapter in his creative endeavors.
Based on a True Story is out now, signifying Smith’s comeback and his willingness to confront his past through music.
