A University of Georgia student, Lily Stewart, who recently gained attention for her smiling mugshot, has been arrested again. On March 23, police took her into custody on charges of obstructing law enforcement and loitering. The Athens-Clarke County online records show she was booked early in the morning after being stopped by UGA police.
After posting a $4,000 bond, Stewart was released a few hours later. As of now, UGA and its police department have not responded to requests for comments, and her attorney has also declined to provide any information.
Earlier this month, Stewart rose to fame when her mugshot from a speeding arrest on March 8 went viral, where she was caught driving 85 mph in a 55 mph zone while on her way to a party at Georgia College & State University. At that time, she received a speeding ticket and was pulled over again shortly after.
Her mugshot, featuring a smile, went viral on social media, bringing her a surge of followers and comments. Stewart reacted with humor, saying, “I look like a basic white girl, and I am,” and mentioned that the attention is amusing.
However, local law enforcement, including Morgan County Sheriff Tyler Hooks, expressed concern over Stewart’s behavior, mentioning that she could have put herself and others at risk. He emphasized that such actions should not be glorified and hopes that this experience serves as a lesson for her.
Stewart is currently addressing her previous speeding violations by attending a defensive driving course, performing community service, and writing a paper on the risks of speeding.
