CARACAS – The United States is working to re-establish a presence in Venezuela, with Laura Dogu arriving in Caracas as the charge d’affaires. This move comes after a period of strained relations, with the American diplomatic mission being closed for seven years.
This follows action taken last month that removed Nicolás Maduro from power.
Dogu shared a message on social media, stating her team is ready to work.
Venezuela and the United States initially broke off diplomatic ties back in February 2019, a decision made by Maduro. This occurred after the U.S. government voiced its support for Juan Guaidó as interim president.
Diosdado Cabello, a prominent figure in Venezuelan politics, mentioned earlier in January that a U.S. embassy could help the Venezuelan government keep an eye on Maduro, who is currently jailed in the U.S.
Venezuelan Foreign Minister Yván Gil stated that Dogu’s arrival is part of a plan to address disagreements through respectful discussion and international law.
Dogu’s arrival comes after Venezuela’s interim president announced an amnesty bill to release political prisoners.
