Two teenagers were tragically found dead in a secluded area of an Arizona national forest, just a week into their summer break. The authorities are treating their deaths as “suspicious.”
The bodies of Pandora Kjolsrud, 18, and Evan Clark, 17, were discovered in the Tonto National Forest near Mount Ord on May 27. Officials from the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office reported that both teens died from gunshot wounds, though they have not released additional details at this stage.
Sgt. Joaquin Enriquez from the Sheriff’s Office stated, “At this time, the circumstances surrounding their deaths are being treated as suspicious.” The Medical Examiner’s Office has ruled both deaths as homicides, affirming that they occurred on May 26.
Kjolsrud and Clark were classmates at Arcadia High School in Phoenix, situated about 64 miles from where they were found. Their friends have set up a makeshift memorial near Mount Ord, a place where the young friends often enjoyed watching the sunset together.
Clark’s colleague, Iara Rosales, expressed sorrow over the loss, saying, “You just cherish all the memories and the laughs. His life was cut very short, and so was Pandora’s. They were very young, and it was just so sudden and a tragedy that you wouldn’t even imagine.”
To support the grieving families, fundraisers have been initiated to help cover the costs of celebrating the lives of these two young individuals after their private funerals.
Kjolsrud was remembered for her vibrant personality and infectious smile. Her friend, Kathryn Leonard, shared heartfelt words, stating, “She was a beautiful human being and a bright light in this world who loved every single person she met and had a unique ability to make every person feel special.”
In a heart-wrenching post, Kjolsrud’s mother, Simone, shared her devastation on social media, saying, “Rest in peace my beautiful girl.” Similarly, Clark’s mother, Sandra Malibu Sweeney, penned an emotional tribute, reminiscing about her son. She described Evan as her only child and expressed her profound grief, stating, “This last week, Evan was taken from me, and my level of grief feels insurmountable.”
Sweeney shared how Evan was a sensitive and loving “old soul.” She recalled letters he wrote her, the last one being a heartfelt message on Mother’s Day, which brought both laughter and tears. “He was special. He deserved a long life,” she remarked.
The tragic deaths have ignited fear among local hikers, raising concerns about safety in the forest area. Community members are expressing their worries about the security of the hiking trails, especially with such violent incidents occurring. One local parent voiced her concerns, indicating, “If there’s something going on in the area, I’d like to know if we’re safe.”
Another community member echoed similar sentiments, stating, “Obviously respecting the people’s families and not getting into those personal details, but I would want to know how we can all be safe.”
As the investigation continues, the community is coming together to support the families affected by this heart-wrenching loss. With questions surrounding safety lingering in the air, the local community stands united as they reflect on the lives and memories of Pandora and Evan. Their legacy, defined by friendship and joy, will not be forgotten in the hearts of those who knew them.
