A group connected to Turning Point USA (TPUSA) recently held an event at a high school in Maryland, sparking a debate about student safety and parental involvement.
A local woman named Nancy voiced her worries at a school board meeting. She said parents weren’t allowed at the TPUSA event and that this lack of transparency could put students at risk, as kids can be easily swayed. She mentioned reporting the event to Child Protective Services.
However, the student who leads the TPUSA-affiliated group defended the event. He explained that his group, Calvert County Club America (CCCA), is separate from the school and that all students had permission from their parents to attend. He also denied online accusations of wrongdoing against his group.
The student leader also pushed back against claims of “grooming,” stating he is a minor himself.
This situation comes as TPUSA is working to have a bigger presence on high school and college campuses. Erika Kirk, the wife of the group’s founder, has said TPUSA will continue to hold debates on campuses to encourage open discussion.
