Mitch Johnson has taken on a role he never anticipated: the head coach of the San Antonio Spurs. Following the recent announcement that long-time coach Gregg Popovich is stepping down, Johnson has officially been named the new coach of the team. This comes after Johnson filled in as the interim coach for the last 77 games of the season.
Popovich, who led the Spurs since 1996, will now focus solely on his duties as the president of basketball operations. Johnson is set to be formally introduced in San Antonio soon.
Reflecting on his unexpected rise, Johnson said, “When I joined the Austin Spurs nine years ago, I could never have imagined this opportunity. Life has a way of taking you down surprising paths, and sometimes the most significant moments come from the most unlikely circumstances.”
The Spurs franchise has a long-standing tradition of valuing continuity in its leadership. Many believe Johnson’s promotion is a fitting choice, considering his contributions over the past decade. Both Popovich and other team executives have recognized his dedication and potential.
“We are thrilled for Mitch Johnson to be our next head coach,” stated Peter J. Holt, managing partner of the Spurs. “Throughout his time here, we’ve seen that he embodies the values and composure needed to guide us forward.”
Johnson initially stepped into the interim role after Popovich suffered a stroke unexpectedly before a game against the Minnesota Timberwolves. He ended the season with a record of 32 wins and 45 losses. Despite the challenges, when he starts next season, he’ll begin with a fresh slate.
Star player Victor Wembanyama expressed trust in the organization’s decision. “I believe they will do what’s right,” he said. “I also have faith in Mitch as he grows into this role. We’re in good hands.”
Having been with the Spurs for nearly a decade, Johnson previously coached the team’s G League affiliate in Austin and led San Antonio during the NBA Summer League in recent years. His basketball journey began at Stanford, and he is the son of former NBA player John Johnson.
“I am incredibly honored to receive this opportunity,” Johnson stated. “I am grateful to Coach Pop and the entire leadership team for trusting me to carry on our legacy. I will put everything I have into making Spurs fans proud.”
