A piano teacher from Beverly Hills has been charged with sexually abusing his 13-year-old student, according to officials in Los Angeles.
Hovanes John Jihanyan, 41, was arrested on December 13 after police received a tip about the alleged incidents that took place last month. The Santa Monica Police Department confirmed the arrest.
On Friday, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office revealed that Jihanyan faces six felony charges, which include one count for “continuous sexual abuse of a child under 14.”
Los Angeles District Attorney Nathan Hochman expressed his outrage at the situation, stating, “I am appalled by these horrific acts of sexual abuse against a vulnerable child. Our office has a long history of aggressively prosecuting child abuse cases, and we are fully committed to seeking justice for the victim and their family.”
Hochman emphasized that the legal system would hold accountable those who target children. He also mentioned that there may be more victims and urged anyone with information about Jihanyan to contact the Santa Monica Police Department.
The charges stem from allegations that Jihanyan abused his student during piano lessons between August and November of this year. Notably, the victim turned 14 during that timeframe.
The incidents reportedly occurred at varying locations, including the student’s home, Jihanyan’s car, and the French Conservatory of Music in Beverly Hills. Currently, Jihanyan is being held on a $1 million bond, and his arraignment is set for January 15. If convicted, he could face up to 29 years in prison and would be required to register as a sex offender for life.
