The Royal Family: Duty and Family Values
For Prince William and Princess Kate, family always comes first. This commitment was especially clear when William stepped back from some royal duties during Kate’s cancer treatments.
Royal author Russell Myers explained that William felt overwhelmed when both Kate and his father, King Charles III, were diagnosed with cancer. His main concern was for his wife and children. He had to balance his family’s needs with his royal responsibilities.
Myers emphasized that William and Kate prioritize their family. They understand their duty to the country, but believe a strong family foundation is most important.
When Kate had to go to the hospital for surgery, the couple carefully explained the situation to their children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis. They reassured them that things would be as normal as possible.
Even while in the hospital, Kate stayed connected with her family through video calls. She wanted to know about her children’s school activities and if their father was managing the cooking!
In March, doctors discovered Kate had cancer. Despite the shock, her first thoughts were for her children and husband. She began preventative chemotherapy to improve her chances of recovery.
William described feeling “in a state of disbelief” after Kate’s diagnosis. He was already dealing with his father’s cancer diagnosis. Kate told her parents and siblings, and then she and William decided to tell their children together, in a positive way.
Kate decided to make a public announcement about her health, hoping her experience could help others.
Throughout this challenging time, William focused on keeping life as normal as possible for their children. He took charge of school drop-offs, and Kate’s parents and siblings visited often. They enjoyed quiet dinners at home, organized playdates, and spent weekends at the Middleton family home.
A close friend said that William and Kate were very careful to protect their children. Kate appreciated William’s support in keeping the children happy and occupied. This allowed her to focus on her treatment and recovery.
In September 2024, Kate announced that she had finished her cancer treatments. By January of last year, she shared that she was in remission.
The couple marked Valentine’s Day by sharing a new photo of themselves, taken by photographer Josh Shinner. They continue to show their love for each other and their commitment to family values.
