Former Vice President Mike Pence recently shared insights about a brief interaction he had with former President Donald Trump during the state funeral for former President Jimmy Carter. This marks one of the few occasions where the two have been seen together since their public disagreements over the 2020 election.
At the service held at the National Cathedral, Pence stood up to greet Trump with a handshake, and the two exchanged friendly words. Pence later recounted the moment, expressing his gladness to speak with Trump. He congratulated him and they both seemed to engage in pleasant small talk.
Notably, Karen Pence, who was sitting next to her husband, chose not to participate in the greeting and did not acknowledge Trump.
In a conversation with Christianity Today, Pence reminisced about one of his last discussions with Trump in early 2021. He had assured Trump that he would keep him in his prayers, to which Trump humorously replied, “Don’t bother.” Pence acknowledged that there are certain matters, particularly regarding January 6, that they might never see eye to eye on, but he affirmed his commitment to praying for Trump regardless.
While their interactions have remained cordial, Pence has expressed concerns regarding potential cabinet appointments, stating that he does not believe Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. is suitable for the role of Health and Human Services Secretary. He also voiced worries about the possibility of former Rep. Tulsi Gabbard taking the position of national intelligence director.
As both figures navigate the political landscape, their relationship continues to be closely watched by supporters and commentators alike.
