The family of Donovan Joshua Leigh Metayer, a survivor of the 2018 Parkland school shooting, has announced his death at age 26. Donovan passed away on December 15 after struggling with schizophrenia for seven years, according to a statement from his sister.
Donovan was a senior at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School when the tragic shooting occurred on February 14, 2018, claiming the lives of 17 people. His family described the loss as an indescribable sorrow that will forever impact their lives.
In a heartfelt message, Donovan’s family shared that he was a bright and curious child who excelled in academics and possessed a warm humor. However, the trauma of the school shooting deeply affected him, leading to mental health challenges such as depression and isolation.
Despite these difficulties, Donovan worked hard to build a future for himself. He earned an IT certificate and found a job at Office Depot, where he quickly advanced. His family was incredibly proud of his progress.
Sadly, a recent lapse in his Risk Protection Order allowed Donovan to purchase a handgun, which he used to end his life a week later. His family hopes that his passing will raise awareness about the importance of mental health support for young people and the lasting impact of gun violence.
The Metayer family has established a GoFundMe page to help cover funeral expenses and support an organization that assists individuals with behavioral health conditions in Florida. They plan to use the funds to create a fund at the Henderson Clinic, providing healthcare, housing, and hope for those in need.
Donovan’s visitation and funeral service will be held on Saturday, January 3, in Coral Springs. The family is grateful for the outpouring of support they have received from the community.
