Team USA experienced a rollercoaster of emotions on Sunday, marked by both setbacks and triumphs at the Winter Olympics.
One of the most talked-about events was Lindsey Vonn’s unfortunate crash during the women’s alpine downhill. Vonn, a seasoned Olympian, had to be taken off the mountain after an accident early in her run. It was later revealed that she suffered a leg fracture and underwent surgery. Vonn was already competing with a torn ACL. At 41, this Olympics was expected to be her last.
Despite the setback with Vonn, there was reason to celebrate in the same event. Breezy Johnson, also representing the United States, skied to victory, securing the gold medal in the women’s alpine downhill. Johnson’s winning time was 1:36.10, a close win against Germany’s Emma Aicher. However, during the excitement of the celebration, Johnson’s gold medal broke when the ribbon holding it snapped. It is uncertain whether she will receive a replacement.
In another exciting event, the U.S. figure skating team clinched the gold medal in the team competition. The competition was tight, with the United States and Japan tied for first place heading into the final round. Ilia Malinin’s performance in the men’s free skate proved to be the difference-maker, edging out Japan and securing the victory for Team USA. Japan took home the silver medal, and Italy won the bronze.
The U.S. mixed doubles curling team also had a successful day, winning two crucial matches. They defeated Estonia and then Sweden. These wins secured their place in the medal round. They are now among the top four teams competing for a medal.
Away from the competitions, a moment of celebration caught the eye. Austria’s Benjamin Karl, after winning gold in the men’s parallel giant snowboard slalom, took off his shirt to celebrate in the snow.
