Congresswoman Seeks Answers in Venezuela Detention Case
A New York Congresswoman is working to help a person from her area who may be held by the government in Venezuela.
Representative Nicole Malliotakis stated she has asked the State Department to look into the matter. She hopes the U.S. government can use its influence to help the person come home.
“My biggest worry right now is that someone I represent might be held unfairly by the Venezuelan government,” Malliotakis said.
The Congresswoman, a Republican, mentioned that the person may have been detained for about two weeks. His family fears he is being held unlawfully, but the U.S. government has not yet made that determination.
Malliotakis’ office released a statement noting that the State Department has advised Americans for months not to travel to Venezuela, due to the high risk of Americans being wrongly detained. While they have not confirmed the detention, they are watching the situation closely and have spoken to the White House and Secretary of State.
“We hope that our constituent will soon safely return to the United States,” Malliotakis’ office stated.
This news comes after officials in Washington discussed the situation in Venezuela. The recent change in leadership in Venezuela has created some uncertainty.
President Trump said recently that the U.S. will help guide Venezuela through a transition period to ensure stability and freedom for the Venezuelan people.
